A washer that suddenly pounds against the wall, rattles the laundry room, or inches across the floor is more than an annoyance. Pause the cycle if the washer is pounding. Open the lid or door once the machine has unlocked, spread the items more evenly around the basket, and restart the spin. If a front-load washer has shaken severely since the first load, check whether the shipping bolts were removed during installation. These bolts secure the drum while the appliance is moved. They must be removed before operating the washer.

Running a washer with shipping bolts installed prevents the tub from moving as designed and can cause intense vibration, banging, and possible internal damage. The bolts are usually located on the back panel. Your installation instructions will show their location and the proper removal process.

Do not assume every rear-panel bolt is a shipping bolt. If you are not certain, stop using the washer and have the installation checked. Removing the wrong fastener can create a larger repair issue.

If the machine is level, the loads are balanced, and the shaking continues on nearly every spin cycle, internal parts may be worn or broken. These repairs are not always visible from the outside, but the pattern of noise and movement can offer useful clues.

Worn shock absorbers, suspension rods, or springs

Washers use suspension systems to keep the tub centered as it accelerates and slows down. Front-load machines commonly use shock absorbers. Many top-load models use suspension rods, springs, or dampening pads. When these parts wear out, the tub can swing too freely and strike the cabinet during spin.

A worn suspension system often causes repeated banging with ordinary-sized loads, not just bulky bedding. You may notice that the basket feels unusually loose when pushed by hand, or that the washer struggles to settle itself before the final spin.
